Hello again Charley!

“My favorite thing about the class is the students because they make me laugh, and Miss Viviana because she is a great role model, teacher and artist.”

new jersy art class for kidsIt’s been two years since we last met up with AFI student Charley in October 2013. Watching her grow as an artist and a student has been a rewarding experience, and is especially meaningful to us as she is part of the very first class of Art Foundations Intensive students to go through The Messy Artist.

Here is a follow up interview with Charley, catching up with her latest news:

advanced fine art classes for kids new jerseyWhat grade are you in now?

I am in 5th grade now.

How has your art changed over the past 2 years?

My art has become more meaningful. I now have a reason for each piece, they are about my life or I try to tell a story.

Charley’s final project last year, displayed in the AFI Art Show: “Bucket List”, Paper/String. (Please click on photos above to open a larger slideshow)

I made a box with papers that has everything I want to achieve written on them and everything I want when I get older in life. There are papers everywhere and I had to make room for the more important things by hanging them up. It looks like there is a lot going on and it can be stressful. This is the feeling I want people to relate to when they look at my art. It tells a story.

What have you learned about recently at The Messy Artist that you found exciting?

My favorite recent thing I’ve learned was special effects makeup. I loved it because we’ve never learned anything like it before and I used it in my Halloween costume.

I have joined cheerleading and take swimming stroke lessons this year too.

What is your favorite part of AFI art class?

What is your favorite color? Perrywinkle (2013: light blue)

What is the favorite place you’ve been? Whistler, Canada because I love skiing with my family there. (2013: Puerto Rico)

What are your favorite things to do in your free time? I like to write stories, draw and invent things. (2013: When I am not making art, I love to play outside, swimming and diving is what I love the most in summer. I also like acting, I have been in a few plays and taken acting classes. I really like to make silly videos on the ipad with my brother.)

What advice do you have for adults?  I really like the song /quote “Live forever young” by Bob Dylan. I listen to him with my dad a lot. (2013: It’s okay to get dirty.)

hello AFI Art Show!

best art class for kids north jerseyWe had another very successful session of Art Foundations Intensives here at The Messy Artist, with an expansion of the program, now in its second year. This year, we grew to four levels of students who completed the comprehensive course, up from three last year. Our Art Foundations Intensive is an invite-only full-year course for the serious art student, with a prerequisite of taking our Art Foundations Class. The AFI students work for 35 weeks on drawings, paintings, and sculptures, in addition to learning the philosophies behind great art.

To augment their class, this year students also took a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Messy Artist instructors accompanied the students and discussed pieces of art on display, and students sketched in the galleries.

The students presented final pieces in an art show on Sunday, June 14th in our studios. On display were final projects, as well as a site-specific art piece created by the students before the show. The site-specific piece consisted of life size tape body sculptures lit by glowing paint in a darkened room.childrens art show nj the messy artist art studio for kids

There was also a participatory mural created at the show, where guests were given slips of paper with ideas on what to draw on the mural.art class camp and party new jersey

The students are justifiably proud of their artworks, and we are impressed with all the hard work they put in. We can’t wait to see what they do next year!

Hello Alexandria!

This week we are introducing you to a young volunteer here at The Messy Artist: Alexandria, an 8th grade middle school student. After seeing our sign one day while driving by with her mother, she reached out to us about interning. She joined us this summer and currently helps out in our Chagalls classes of 3-6 year old children. Her patience and ability to relate to the students are wonderful complements to the passion she has for both art and children.

Alexandria

How long have you been coming to The Messy Artist?
Since July of 2014, for the summer.

Why did you want to intern/volunteer here?
I wanted to volunteer at a place that I can use my skills/love of art and work with children.

art studio for kids new jersey

What is the best part about interning at The Messy Artist?
Connecting with the children, and being able to work/teach to every child. Also, learning about new art projects/ideas that I can share with other teachers and peers.

Have you always enjoyed working with young kids? Have you had other experience doing this?
Yes, I have been working with kids for a long time, and have always enjoyed it. Before I came to The Messy Artist I worked with children, but mainly with children at a special needs camp.

What’s your favorite age group to work with?
Any age group, but if I would have to choose, it would be with 3-8 year olds.art class for elementary toddler and middle school children

We know you help your mom a lot with children with special needs. Do you prefer working with typically developing children or children with special needs?
I don’t prefer any type of children – with or without disabilities – but I have a special place in my heart for children with special needs.

What is your first memory of making art?
In my first grade art class, I drew a still life picture, using pastels, charcoal, and color pencils and realizing my talent because I won an art award.

The Messy Artist Alexandria art
Alexandria’s award winning artwork was made into a notecard by the school. Here is one of them.

Do you have a favorite medium (painting, pencil, clay)?
Pencil and painting but only acrylic – not watercolor.

What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
Drawing, All-Star Cheerleading, Reading and completing puzzles.

What advice do you have for adults, about art or kids?
I would want adults to encourage each child with positive feedback with each project/picture that they draw. Also, to engage with their imaginary play and design of what they made.best art class for children morris county nj

What is your favorite place that you have been?
The beach in Lavallette.

What is your favorite project you have done at The Messy Artist?
The frozen paint, because while we drew with the cubes of frozen paint it would melt away in your hands. Art and Science combined!frozen paint messy artist

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Alexandria – and for coming in to intern every week! You help make The Messy Artist a special place.

hello Charley!

We are always inspired by the ways our students take what they have learned in class and incorporate it into their art.  As a new feature we are spotlighting individual student artists –  to share not only the art they create, but the personalities behind the pieces.

hello Charley!

We chose 8 year-old Charley to kick off the series because she was so expressive in both her painting and her explanation of its meaning and the creation process. She has been coming to classes at The Messy Artist for over a year, and is currently a student in our full year Art Foundations Intensive Level 3, a class for advanced students by teacher recommendation.

So without further ado – meet Charley!

Tell us about your painting “Feelings War”,  made earlier this year.

charleys dream painting art class new jersey

I thought of the idea the night before class when I couldn’t sleep, I wanted to make art about feelings. It means a “feelings war” and the positives trying to beat the negatives.

The red is angry, the black is unhappy/darkness, the blue is joy and the yellow is happiness. The angry colors are rough and sharp and the yellow is smooth and pleasant.

I drew it in pencil first on a canvas and started with the red flames, then I did the yellow swirls at the bottoms. Then I filled in the top and bottom with the colors and blended the black and blue to make a gradual change from the anger to happiness feelings.

When I look at it now, I am really proud of myself. I think it looks really good and I actually can’t believe I made it!

It is not exactly what I had envisioned, but it came out even better than that.

What is your first memory of making art?

My first memory of art is when I was little and I made stick figure people, sometimes I forgot the arms or the hair.

What does art mean to you?

Art is just fun for me, I love making new things and seeing how it turns out.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not making art?

When I am not making art, I love to play outside, swimming and diving is what I love the most in summer. I also like acting, I have been in a few plays and taken acting classes. I really like to make silly videos on the ipad with my brother.

How do you feel when you are creating art?

When I am creating art I feel very happy, it takes my mind off of everything else and makes me feel like there is nothing else in the world but art when I am working on a project.

What would you say to someone who says they aren’t good at art?

I would say keep trying, there isn’t a wrong way to do art, everybody is different.
