hello Charley!

We are always inspired by the ways our students take what they have learned in class and incorporate it into their art.  As a new feature we are spotlighting individual student artists –  to share not only the art they create, but the personalities behind the pieces.

hello Charley!

We chose 8 year-old Charley to kick off the series because she was so expressive in both her painting and her explanation of its meaning and the creation process. She has been coming to classes at The Messy Artist for over a year, and is currently a student in our full year Art Foundations Intensive Level 3, a class for advanced students by teacher recommendation.

So without further ado – meet Charley!

Tell us about your painting “Feelings War”,  made earlier this year.

charleys dream painting art class new jersey

I thought of the idea the night before class when I couldn’t sleep, I wanted to make art about feelings. It means a “feelings war” and the positives trying to beat the negatives.

The red is angry, the black is unhappy/darkness, the blue is joy and the yellow is happiness. The angry colors are rough and sharp and the yellow is smooth and pleasant.

I drew it in pencil first on a canvas and started with the red flames, then I did the yellow swirls at the bottoms. Then I filled in the top and bottom with the colors and blended the black and blue to make a gradual change from the anger to happiness feelings.

When I look at it now, I am really proud of myself. I think it looks really good and I actually can’t believe I made it!

It is not exactly what I had envisioned, but it came out even better than that.

What is your first memory of making art?

My first memory of art is when I was little and I made stick figure people, sometimes I forgot the arms or the hair.

What does art mean to you?

Art is just fun for me, I love making new things and seeing how it turns out.

What would you say to someone who says they aren’t good at art?

I would say keep trying, there isn’t a wrong way to do art, everybody is different.

The Messy Artist is a special place to create art. We offer year-round art classes for children 18 months through adulthood. In addition to art classes from September through June, we offer summer art camp and Drop-In and Play art activities for kids between our regular sessions. Our bright, colorful studio is also the perfect place for a kid’s birthday party! The Messy Artist children’s art center was created and designed by Owner/Director Donna Bernstein, a professional educator and artist. The curriculum is inspired and guided by Donna’s teaching experience and research in child development, as well as her passion for art. At The Messy Artist, art lessons for kids entertain and enrich their brains, bodies, and hearts.
